I heard from the mouth of Srila Vamana Maharaja’s virtuous and learned mother, Srimati Bhagavati-devi, that pujyapada Vamana Maharaja was born on the Krsnapaksa-navami in the month of Pausa (23 December) 1921, in the village of Pilajanga in the Khulna district of East Bengal (Bangladesh). His childhood name was Santosa. His father, Sri Satisacandra, took diksa from my most worshipful master, om visnupada astottara-sata Sri Srimad Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Gosvami Maharaja. After diksa his name became Sri Sarvesvara dasa Adhikari. His mother was the disciple of the world famous jagad-guru, nitya-lila-pravista om visnupada astottara-sata Sri Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Prabhupada, and his paternal uncle was one of Srila Prabhupada’s first disciples, pujyapada Narasimha Maharaja.
In 1930, during Srila Prabhupada’s manifest pastime, Santosa, who was about nine years old, accompanied his mother to Mayapura to attend the Sri Gaura-purnima festival at Sri Caitanya Matha. On that occasion, his mother offered him to the lotus feet of Srila Prabhupada, who entrusted him to the care of my gurupada-padma, nitya-lila-pravista om visnupada Sri Srimad Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Gosvami, his dear-most associate. My gurupada-padma’s name then was Sri Vinoda-bihari Brahmacari Krtiratna. He enrolled Santosa in the Sri Bhaktivinoda Institute in Mayapura. Sri Sarasvati Ṭhakura Prabhupada gave him harinama initiation and later our gurudeva named him Sri Sajjana Sevaka Brahmacari.
