The scriptures tell us of the incalculable value of even a moment's association with a true saint, and Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja is exalted even among saints. With great sincerity, his disciples and followers thus availed themselves of any opportunity to accompany him on his morning walks and attend his morning darsanas. In those informal settings, they freely asked a variety of questions, his illuminating responses revealing a mere glimpse of the devotion radiating brilliantly within his heart. Sometimes personal, sometimes disciplinary, sometimes humorous and always loving, he would impart the deepest understandings of the scriptures for the benefit of all. It was on his repeated order that these walks and darsanas be transcribed and published. In this way, he has invited you, also, to walk with him and hear the jewel-like teachings he wants to share with you.

"Srila Gurudeva: When Sudama Vipra went to see Krsna, he was extremely poor. What did Krsna do? He gave Sudama great wealth and opulence. Do you know the history of the elephant Gajendra and the crocodile? When Gajendra called to Krsna’s incarnation, Lord Visnu, the Lord came to the seashore where Gajendra and the crocodile were engaged in battle. Lord Visnu killed the crocodile and gave him liberation. Moreover, He gave Gajendra pure bhakti and sent him to Vaikuntha. This is another example of Kasna's being dina-bandhu, and there are so many other examples. In what way is He jagat-pate?
Madhuvrata dasa: He is the controller of the whole world.
Srila Gurudeva: In what way?
Brajanath dasa: He manifests as His various incarnations: Maha-Visnu, GarbhodakaSayi Visnu, KsirodakaSayi Visnu, the gunaavataras, SaktyaveSaavataras, and manvantaraavataras. In so many ways He is managing this entire universe for the benefit of the living entities.
Srila Gurudeva: He empowered Brahma to create, and Brahma created the universe. He empowered Saìkara (Lord Siva) to destroy. He manifested as Visnu, and as Visnu He supports and nourishes the world. He also manifested as the Supersoul in the heart of all living entities, and in that form He councils us to be careful. In this way He is jagat-pate. In what way is He gopesa?
Madhuvrata dasa: Gopesa has two meanings. He is the controller of the gopis, and He is controlled by the gopis.
Sripada Madhava Maharaja: Gopesa is a combination of two words: gopa (cowherd boy) plus isvara (controller or Lord).
Srila Gurudeva: He nourishes the cowherd boys by giving them the relish of His prema.
Sripada Madhava Maharaja: On so many occasions He saved the gopas from the demons.
Srila Gurudeva: Gopika-kanta means that He is controlled by the gopis. Radha-kanta means that He is controlled by the love and affection of the gopis, and especially by the love of Srimati Radhika. Try to remember the mood of each Sloka I give you, as well as the meaning of every word of each Sloka. You will then realize the truths therein, and after that any prayer or Sloka that comes to you will come with realization."
